Utah: Carpenter takes yellow with long-range attack

The cheeky late attack didn’t work on stage1, so for stage 2, Robin Carpenter went for the Hail Mary attack. It worked.

Carpenter (Holowesko — Citadel) and Cuban rider Ruben Campanioni (Jamis) broke away with 110km remaining in the stage, built a seven-minute advantage, and held the gap to the line in the small town of Torrey. After circling Torrey three times, Carpenter dropped Campanioni in the waning meters to take the victory and the yellow jersey.

“Ruben and I were coaching each other for that entire last lap,” Carpenter said. “I was just thinking of making it to the line first.”

The victory helps cement Carpenter’s reputation as a man for long-range breakaways. In 2014 he won the second stage of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge with a similar long move. That race, however, was briefly neutralized due to weather. After the group came together, Carpenter was allowed to re-start the event with his gap.

Carpenter said his victory in Torrey now overshadows the 2014 win.

“After [the 2014 win] I didn’t have any of the validation from other teams or many other riders, who said the neutralization was a caveat that made it less of an actual victory,” Carpenter said. “Today I think I proved that wasn’t the case.”

Carpenter and Campioni escaped after the peloton endured a flurry of attacks for the opening 50km of the stage. WorldTour teams BMC and Trek-Segafredo took turns sending riders up the road in an attempt to put Cannondale-Drapac on the defensive.

Carpenter and Campioni made their move on the lower slopes of the climb up Boulder Mountain.

Behind, the Silber Pro Cycling team of Stage 1 winner Kris Dahl took control of the peloton. But the breakaway’s gap continued to climb, until they had seven minutes with 60km remaining.

“We were expecting some other teams to chip in. When they did, it was too late,” Dahl said. “We were asking around [for help]. Nobody was too keen.”

By the time the leaders reached the two 27km finishing circuits around Torrey at the end of the 159km day, their advantage held at around five minutes. By the time Carpenter launched his winning move, in sight of the line, the peloton was closer to two minutes behind.

After the finish, American veteran Chris Horner said he knew Carpenter had it in the bag once the gap hit seven minutes.

“That boy has big balls,” Horner said. “You give a guy a gap like that and you’re never going to see him again.”

To make things even sweeter for the Holowesko outfit, Travis McCabe rounded out the podium in third after out-sprinting Kiel Reijnen of Trek – Segafredo and IAM’s David Tanner.

Wednesday features a tough 191km ride from Richfield to Payson, Utah, which includes a late category 1 climb of Mount Nebo before descending to the finish, about 40km after the summit. The group will likely splinter on Mt. Nebo, which was featured in the 2014 edition.

Carpenter said he plans to defend the jersey on the stage, despite the climb. He’s currently on good form, having won the overall at Oregon’s July 20-24 Cascade Cycling Classic.

“It’s a distinct possibility that I’ll be able to stay with the front group,” he said. “I’m climbing really well this year.”

Carpenter has raced with the Holowesko — Hincapie team for four years. When asked if he has ambitions of racing in the WordTour, Carpenter said he plans to keep his eyes out for “the right opportunity.”

“My No. 1 goal is to continue to get paid to race my bicycle,” he said. “Whether it’s here or over there.”
