The Tote was established by Winston Churchill in 1927 as a horse racing pool betting provider. Pool betting offered race-goers the chance to bet legally (rather than going to illegal bookmakers) on horse racing whilst also contributing towards profits that would be reinvested into the sport of kings.

The Tote became most famous for its racecourse operations but expanded to offer betting in shops, on the telephone, on the internet and via mobile. Fixed-odds bets were offered alongside the traditional pool offering to give customers access to a full and comprehensive service.

In 2004, the Tote rebranded their operations. The pool betting service became known as “Totepool” and the bookmaker offering the mix of fixed-odds and pool bets became “Totesport”. So a customer could visit the Totesport website and place Totepool bets as well as taking a price on all the top racing, football and sports events taking place.

When the government decided to sell the Tote in 2011, Betfred bought the business and the Totesport brand today is operated under the Petfre licence in Gibraltar.

Totesport still has its roots in horseracing and is a leading sponsor of the sport in the UK. It continues to offer the popular Totepool bets such as the Scoop6, Placepot and Jackpot alongside a full and comprehensive fixed-odds service covering not just racing but football, golf, tennis and a whole host of other sports and specials.
