TRAINERS on Newmarket’s Racecourse Side could soon be working horses up their own man-made Warren Hill after the Jockey Club yesterday unveiled plans for an “iconic” new gallop in the town.
As part of a bid to boost the fortunes of the area that includes the well-populated Hamilton Road, the Jockey Club hopes to construct a partially-enclosed four-and-a-half-furlong all-weather gallop, rising 30 metres from start to finish, that is likely to cost in excess of £10 million.

The gallop would recreate the conditions of the world famous Warren Hill while removing the need for trainers to walk their horses across the town in search of an incline, in many cases saving more than an hour and a half per lot each morning.
The all-weather surface would be 4.5 metres wide, the same as gallops across Newmarket, with a track for emergency vehicles running alongside.
It is hoped the new facility would make Racecourse Side more attractive to owners and trainers, with the yards in the area operating at only 59 per cent capacity, compared to 89 per cent occupancy ratio on the Bury Side of town.
